Goals:

  • To break down the shape of an elephant into recognizable shapes.
  • To identify colors through collage.

Objectives: Students will create collage elephants inspired by the book Elmer, by David McPhee. Intended Audience: Kindergarten Overview: Purim is an upcoming holiday that is celebrated in disguise. I like that this book, Elmer, discusses disguise and then promotes being an individual. I was able to connect the upcoming holiday that they are learning about with this book for my art lesson.

New York Learning Standards Addressed:

  2. Students will know and use a variety of visual arts materials, techniques, and processes.
  3. Students will respond critically to a variety of works in the arts, connecting the individual work to other works and to other aspects of human endeavor and thought.

Materials:
White copy paper
Black magic markers
Colored tissue paper
Scissors
Gluesticks
Construction paper
Pencils
Googley Eyes

Procedure:

  1. Teacher will review the Purim custom of dressing in disguise.
  2. Teacher will read a book about disguise, noting the colors in Elmer, by David McPhee.
  3. Teacher will introduce Elephant project, showing examples. With students, break down the Elephant into shapes.
  4. Each student will collage a page with tissue paper and gluestick. Teacher will go to each table to assist and guide.
  5. Students will turn over paper and draw an elephant. Encourage students to draw big.
  6. Student will cut out their elephant and mount it on construction paper. Then they can draw in an ear and an eye, or glue on the googely eye.
  7. Students will look at each others elephants, noticing how they are all unique.

Adaptations: Some students may need help cutting out their elephants.

Assessment: Teacher will ask students about the shapes and colors in the book and the collage project.
