Goals:

  • To build scissoring skills.
  • To tie Lark’s head knots.

Objectives: Create “rugs” with paper, and tassels with yarn.

Intended Audience: First Grade

Overview: A prior lesson showed students were not confident in scissor cutting. While introducing students to and Indian style of rug, this lesson primarily builds scissoring skills.

  • Students will make works of art that explore different kinds of subject matter, topics, themes.
  • Students will know and use a variety of visual arts materials, techniques, and processes.
  • Students will respond critically to a variety of works in the arts, connecting the individual work to other works and to other aspects of human endeavor and thought.
  • Students will develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society.

Materials:
Color construction paper
Scissors
Gluestick
Yarn

Procedure:

  1. Teacher will show images of dhurrie rugs and describe their characteristics.
  2. Teacher will demonstrate the cutting techniques for cutting, curved lines, sharp angles, straight lines. Show student show to design a pattern before gluing down strips of paper. Explain to students that each table is working together as a group to cut the papers on their table. No one can move on to the designing stage until all of the papers are cut.
  3. Teacher will introduce Elephant project, showing examples. With students, break down the Elephant into shapes.
  4. Each student will collage a page with tissue paper and glue-stick. Teacher will go to each table to assist and guide.
  5. Students will turn over paper and draw an elephant. Encourage students to draw big.
  6. Student will cut out their elephant and mount it on construction paper. Then they can draw in an ear and an eye, or glue on the googely eye.
  7. Students will look at each others elephants, noticing how they are all unique.

Adaptations: Some students may need help cutting out their elephants.

Assessment: Teacher will ask students about the shapes and colors in the book and the collage project.
