Goals: Students will learn about relief sculpture and multicultural masks.

Objectives: Students will sculpt a mask using papier mache.

Intended Audience: 7th Grade

Materials:
Newspaper
Glue
Water
Gesso
Paintbrushes
Cardboard
Acrylic Paint

Pre-Requisite Knowledge: Students should be familiar with papier mache.

Procedure:
Day One
1) Teacher will present an array of multicultural masks on Smartboard, leading a discussion about similarities and differences between types of masks.
2) Students will sketch ideas for their masks.

Day Two-Eight
1) Teacher will demonstrate for students how to cut cardboard in shape of mask, and build up volume and contour, using masking tape to stabilize newspaper. Papier mache surface to seal sculpture, apply gesso to smooth over surface. Paint decoration with acrylic paints.
2) Students will work on their masks independently with consultations with teacher.
3) Completed masks will be mounted on boards for display.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on participation, independent work and mask making.
