Goals: Students will learn about positive and negative space in composition.
Objectives: Students will create black and white compositions demonstrating understanding of positive and negative space.
Intended Audience: 6th Grade

– Students will design, cut and paste their composition.

– Students will discern positive and negative space while looking at images.
4. Students will develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society.
– Students will look at Matisse still-life paintings.
Materials:
Smart Board
Black and white construction paper
Scissors
Glue
Pre-Requisite Knowledge: Students should be familiar with some elements of art- line, shape, color, texture.
Procedure:
1) Teacher will present positive and negative space in Smartboard presentation.
2) Students will create black and white compositions, paying close attention to use of positive and negative space. Challenge students to make a visual illusion- an image where positive and negative space can be reversed to communicate different images.
3) Students will share with the class.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on participation and understanding of positive and negative space.
